BRITISH BUSINESS DOESN’T WANT HS2 … SAYS BRITISH BUSINESS.

A new report from the Institute of Directors – “HS2:  on the wrong track” – says that “HS2 is not the infrastructure project Britain needs, nor that British business wants, because not enough businesses stand to benefit from it”.

This is the latest damning assessment of the blighted and vastly expensive vanity project.

Other key points in the report are that:

  • From 2011 to 2013 the importance of high-speed rail to IoD members’ businesses has fallen significantly.
  • IoD members would rather see £50bn spent on bringing Britain’s existing transport infrastructure into the 21st century.
  • With the exception of Wales, business leaders in every region of the UK disagreed with the Government’s contention that the economic benefits of HS2 outweigh the costs.
  • Overall, 30% of IoD members believe the benefits of HS2 outweigh the costs, but nearly half (49%) believe the opposite.

The IoD report concludes by saying:

“The IoD understands that there are businesses that will benefit from HS2.  Our contention, drawn from our members’ views, is that not enough businesses benefit; certainly not enough to warrant the vast sums the project is anticipated to cost.  Across the country, there simply is not the level of business support to justify blowing Britain’s infrastructure budget on a project with such potential to turn into a white elephant”.

Reacting to the report, Richard Houghton, a Director of HS2 Action Alliance, said:

“This report once again proves that HS2 is a massive waste of money, which is not needed and not even wanted by British business, who supposedly stand to gain most from it.

Polls show there is also a majority of the British people who are against HS2.  So, now British business and the British people are united in saying to our out-of-touch politicians:  we do not want HS2.

“It’s scandalous…..the politicians are pressing ahead with HS2 in direct contravention to the wishes of the British people. The question has to be asked:  why is the Labour Party propping-up the Coalition Government by supporting HS2 against the very people it claims to represent?”
