HS2: GOVERNMENT NOT-SO-GREEN RAILWAY REPORT – MORE RED FACES.

EMBARGO 0001, MONDAY, APRIL 7, 2014.

Richard Houghton of HS2 opposition group HS2 Action Alliance (HS2AA), commenting on the damning Environmental Audit Committee report which destroys HS2’s claims that it would create a green railway, said:

“HS2 is a monster coming over the Chiltern hills. Academics, scientists, economists and engineers are yelling ‘it’s behind you’, but pro-HS2 politicians cup their ears and say ‘I can’t hear you’: the HS2 political pantomime goes on.

“The ‘HS2 and the environment’ report makes a number of crystal-clear statements, but primarily that costs will escalate even further beyond the current budget to address the issues of environmental damage and carbon impact. Green report – red faces.

“The report could not be more damning: the environmental impact has not been properly considered, HS2 trains will be far from green, and those trains cannot run at top speed.

“Combined with a failure to meet the criteria relevant to connectivity as laid down when the project was first announced, this is undeniably becoming a no-brainer. This is all about profits and politics. The potential victims of HS2 – homeowners, farmers and small business operators – are an irrelevance to Sir David Higgins and the Department for Transport (DfT).

“What more do the academics, economists, scientists, politicians, environmentalists, engineers and even train operators – each of whom have stated ad nauseam that HS2 is a hugely ill-judged proposal – have to say or do to make the screamingly obvious absolutely obvious?

“We’re perhaps occasionally mistaken for a bunch of Nimbys, but the truth of the matter is the HS2 Action Alliance campaign to halt HS2 is based on hard facts and the considered submissions of experts. Any humanitarian argument is wasted on Sir David Higgins and the DfT.

“But the vast majority of the facts and reports destroying any environmental, business, capacity or speed-related case for HS2 are actually generated in reports commissioned by HS2 and government themselves. Our world-ranking rail economists and engineers have written to the government pointing out a vast array of factual omissions, inconsistencies and inaccuracies in HS2 plans.

“It is also worth noting that a great deal of the content of the ‘HS2 and the environment report’ agrees with – and may even have been sourced from – HS2AA submissions to the environmental statement consultation: we have commissioned reports from independent experts relevant to carbon impact, environmental damage, noise and waste disposal plans for HS2, and those reports unerringly state HS2 will fail to meet either legal requirements for such a project, or the impacts have been understated or calculated inaccurately.”
