WAKEFIELD COUNCIL’S HS2 “EMPEROR’S CLOTHES” MOMENT: GIVE US FUNDING FOR BETTER LOCAL TRANSPORT.

Commenting on Wakefield Council’s vote against the construction of HS2 (http://www.pontefractandcastlefordexpress.co.uk/news/local-news/wakefield-council-opposes-hs2-rail-link-1-6404884), Richard Houghton, a director of HS2 Action Alliance – the biggest national HS2 opposition campaign – said:

“Common sense prevails – and it comes from Yorkshire: where else?

“It’s an ‘Emperor’s clothes’ eureka moment. It’s screamingly obvious that HS2 is a pointless vanity project, and Wakefield Council is stating what every council in the country affected by HS2 should be thinking: what could we do with a slice of the £50 billion the Government says HS2 will cost?

“Wakefield Council’s recognition that they should focus on what they need, not what they are given, plus their appreciation that the local population says that HS2 is not needed, are true reflections of what the public opinion polls show the majority of the population believes – both in Yorkshire and nationally.

“Wakefield Council believes that investment in the region’s infrastructure and transport network is key. The population of London is not going to flock to Yorkshire just because there’s a new railway.

“Anybody who knows West Yorkshire knows that it needs its roads network unclogging. There is a strong demand for improved surface transport generally, and a new airport in or around the Leeds area would help regenerate areas which are struggling, and capitalise on the potential Leeds has on both national and international footings.

“Let’s hope the local Wakefield MP – Labour Transport Spokesperson, Mary Creagh – sits up and listens to the common sense of her local council, rather than continuing to prop-up the Coalition Government in supporting HS2 against the wishes of the British people so clearly expressed in YouGov polls”.
